Choosing to Celebrate

Today is our 2 year anniversary…of when Kyle got down on one knee and asked me my favorite question.

“Kelsey Lynne Blome, will you marry me?”

September 29th, 2013.

So this year, on a Tuesday, just because it is September 29th, I’m choosing to celebrate.

And here’s why.

The last month has been craziness. 5 weddings. 10 portrait sessions. 50 gazillion e-mails. 3 thousand phone calls. 15 hundred dirty dishes. You get the picture. Life goes by so fast. In a way, it feels like I have been holding my breath. Waiting for October, knowing that once October gets here, there will be a little space to breathe.

So in the midst of beautiful chaos, I’m choosing to remember two years ago when life stopped and I went from being a girlfriend to a fiancé. And in 5 months, we will celebrate again when we celebrate our 2nd Wedding Anniversary. And in October, we will celebrate my birthday. And we will celebrate my parent’s anniversary in April. And Thanksgiving in November. And we will celebrate Christmas throughout the entire month of December. And Kyle’s birthday in March. And the list goes on…

Because those are the moments that feel like breathing in the midst of going.going.going. Celebration is what makes the work worth it. Celebration is what makes the hard do-able. It’s what makes me buckle down and tackle my to-do list, or the mountain of laundry on the floor of my closet. It’s knowing that life isn’t JUST work. That in between things that have to get done, there are moments where we get to look back and see all that has been accomplished. Isn’t that what celebration is in a nutshell? Looking back on all that has happened, and taking a moment to be grateful. For what happened, what is happening, and what is to come.

Sometimes, we celebrate the fact that it is Thursday. By going out to Indian food and filling our tummies with Naan and Butter Chicken.

Sometimes, we celebrate the weekend with homemade banana bread and coffee for breakfast.

Sometimes, we celebrate family by playing Settlers of Catan around our dining room table.

Sometimes, we celebrate summer by grilling up steaks and eating outside in tank tops.

Sometimes, we celebrate the fact that we made it through a hard week by putting our phones away and taking a nap together.

Sometimes, we celebrate friendship by coffee dates that turn into hours of vulnerability.

Sometimes, we celebrate booking weddings by buying airplane tickets to somewhere we’ve always wanted to go.

And here is something I’ve noticed. That celebrating isn’t usually done alone. It’s done with the people who know us, who love us, and who care about us enough to make our joys, their joys.

So, if you think you have nothing to celebrate. I’ll give you an idea. Celebrate the people who care about you enough to drop their plans, hop in a car, and celebrate life with you over a bowl of hot pasta, cold ice cream, or salty popcorn. The people who laugh with you when you are happy, and cry with you in the midst of your hard.

Life has given each of us such beautiful people in our lives. If nothing else, let’s celebrate the fact that we don’t have to do life alone.

Cheers, friends.
