A Letter to my Hero.

Dear JerBear, Dad, Papa,

Thinking about Father’s Day this year, I felt a bit more reflective than usual. Last year, being newly married, I didn’t fully realize the transition that had taken place. This year, I feel like I am able to see how marriage has made a transition in all of my relationships, including ours. But the biggest thing I have/am realizing, are the things that you gave me in my first 25 years of life. You have been my hero. You gave me a firm foundation. You gave me confidence in my abilities. You gave me wisdom, and still do.

Here are a few of the things I love about you.

You are a hard worker. Everything you do, you do with 100% of your effort. You never go halfway. This is not only true in your business, but in your marriage, in your fathering, and in your relationships.

You are consistent. Consistently available, consistently welcoming. Always there for me. I have never wondered where you are. Because for my whole life, you have shown me your love by showing up. Not just physically, but emotionally and mentally. You have given me your time, your attention, your wisdom, your advice.

You are present. You take the time to ask what is going on in my life. And the people around you. You genuinely care about people.

You are strong. Not only are you a great listener, shoulder to cry on, and mediator of debates. You have had your share of tough moments over the last 60 years. You have lived a full life, but have always pressed through any hardships with faith, confidence, and joy.

You show me how to trust the Lord. In the midst of confusion, or fear, or sickness, you have never failed to trust that Jesus has things under control. You do not let circumstances define your faith. I so admire that about you.

You are hilarious. You have shown me how to play hard, enjoy life, and understand that “you can’t take it with you.” So I might as well enjoy it.

You are full of wisdom. I have never followed a piece of advice that you gave me and seen bad results. You are open to share what you have learned with me, and others who ask. This means the world. Being an adult is hard sometimes. Mortgages, Insurance, Taxes. All things that I have so many questions about. You never are annoyed with my questions, but instead share openly what you have learned.

You are the best dad. Ever. I would never choose anyone else. I know we don’t get to pick our parents, but I am pretty sure I won the lottery with you and mom.

Happy Father’s Day, Sparky.

Cheers to you! You are one in a million, and I’m so glad to call you mine.
